New European Requirements for Materials and Products in Contact with Drinking Water
The European Directive 2020/2184 (Drinking Water Directive – DWD), which replaces the previous Directive 98/83/EC, introduces a new harmonized European system for materials, components, and products intended to come into contact with drinking water.
IIP has obtained accreditation for Product Certification according to the Drinking Water Directive, becoming one of the first Certification Bodies — and the second in Italy — to achieve accreditation in this field.
The objective of the regulation is to ensure common safety, quality, and compliance requirements for all products used in the abstraction, treatment, storage, and distribution systems of water intended for human consumption.
Starting from December 31, 2026, manufacturers and operators in the sector will need to comply with a new regulatory framework introducing structured and harmonized European requirements, with particular focus on:
compliance of materials and components
specific laboratory testing
technical documentation and traceability
product certification
For manufacturers, distributors, utilities, and operators in the water sector, this means:
new compliance requirements
the need for technical and documentation updates
increasing attention from customers and contracting authorities
certification obligations
the need to demonstrate compliance according to harmonized European criteria
IIP Support for DWD Compliance
The accreditation enables IIP to support companies throughout the entire compliance process, offering:
testing activities and laboratory analysis
technical conformity assessments
documentation support
accredited product certification
assistance in interpreting regulatory requirements
The service is integrated with the expertise of the IIP MOCA laboratory, allowing companies to rely on a single partner for all activities required to achieve DWD compliance.
